Your pinning ceremony was awesome, It made me tear up! You all did it, I am so proud of you all, congratulations. I took a bunch of pics too.

A word of advice,
try to take your NCLEX within a week or 2 of your review courses. Trust me. You really can't study for the NCLEX. You will see what I mean when you take it. The questions are really straight forward and easy to understand, it is the choices that are a little odd. Don't let that make you nervous though, I thought it was great and was bummed when it shut off. The tests that you have been getting the whole time throughout the program are harder than the NCLEX.
Remember that they are only testing you on entry level nursing, basic safety. It does not go very deep. A peds Q may not really be a peds Q. They may just be testing how you prioritize, or how you might critically think. They may throw in some diseases or meds you have never heard of in your life but they are not really checking out how much you know about the name they threw at you, they may be just checking out your ABCs or thoughts about how to keep someone safe.
Statistically speaking, the longer you wait the more freaked out you will get and the more basic info you will forget and you will put yourself at a higher risk of not passing.
The Davis NCLEX Qs on the CD are as about as close as you can get to how the NCLEX really looks. Practice enough to get comfortable with taking NCLEX tests on a computer if you have not been doing that already and then go for it.
It is normal to walk out of there feeling like you failed. The test is designed to make you feel
that way. That is actually a good sign. Most of us knew the results in a few days.

I took mine in SF. I stayed at the same motel that I stayed in for the NCLEX review. I took my husband and we went for a few days. We made a deal out of it. My rationing was, that no matter what, I am going to have a good time and reward myself and him for all of the stress caused by the program. We went a day early to find the testing site, ( at the bottom of Coit Tower) and to relax. The beach was 2 blocks from the motel. I walked on it the night before, saw the moon reflected on the water, heard the sounds of the water and birds, smelled the beachy smells and stored it all up in my memory in case I needed a place during the exam to mentally retreat to.

After the test we had a really good time in SF doing or not doing whatever we wanted to do. It was great! I highly recommend it.

I just wanted to say congratulations to everyone and to say "thank you" for being the people that you are. Throughout the program we have kind of compared ourselves to other classess and I wanted to say thank you for being a class that I've been proud to be a part of. Some of you I haven't had rotations/classes with, but I know your face, and even a few names, and I'm honored to be associated with you. 3 DAYS ?! I can hardly believe it. I wish the best of life for all of us. WAY TO GO EVERYBODY!! 2007--simply the best!
(BTW-Wal-mart has "class of 2007" flip-flops... uh huh, I know you want some!)

NCLEX

You won't hear from the board until you schedule your exam, which happens after they recieve final transcripts when semester ends. Wait for a few days after finals and go to the pearson view website and register. You will then recieve an email, which is your authorization to test. But don't bother waiting for mail from the board or you will wait forever. It is frustrating not knowing if you did everthing right, but nobody from our class heard from them. You can check you IP status on the state board web site, some show up as early as the day after finals. Good Luck to everyone.

Ok, this may be a very dumb question,... but I didn't go to any other capping/pinning so I don't have a clue. So, do we come with our caps already attached to our heads, or is that part of the ceremony?? How far back are we suppose to wear these ??(since some of us have large heads and are going to have to use a bazillion hair pins anyway)
My third question, I'm giving the nursing pledge, do I just stand up give the pledge & sit down? Do people repeat it with me? I don't know these major important things!!!!! Somebody have mercy on me & give me a clue.... I may start hearing voices with Lynn :)

Most of my experience had been at Dameron and one stint at Lodi so I haven't been exposed to many of the possible candidates. Caps will not be in until about a week before graduation.

Pins are in the bookstore, you go to the customer service desk, you will get an order form, fill out, take to register, pay and give copy of reciept to nursing office. The pin is 58.95

Cost of yearbooks will be out within this week, keep an eye on your delta emails for info.

You get 10 free invites, they are in the nursing office...you must sign them out to get them.

I think that if I can take care of those details I may actually believe I might be graduating.... if not then it's a fabulous distraction !

Come join your fellow nursing/health students for snacks, raffles and prizes, and most of all, info about the SNA. Also find out the benefits of being an officer, leadership scholarships and more.

Don't forget, we need officers for President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and ICC Representative. Description of duties listed below, if you are interested or know someone who is, please attend the meeting.

Elections for Officer Positions:
President: Oversees club activities, responsible for meeting agendas, representative of SNA at monthly faculty meetings, responsible for active club status with Student Activities, and delegation of other officers as needed.
Vice President: Supports President in planning and implementing ideas and club events.
Secretary: Makes and posts flyers for meetings, takes notes at meetings and formats minutes to be distributed at the next meeting.
Treasurer: Keeps financial records, makes deposits and payment requests for club events, manages inventory and ordering.
ICC Representative: Represents the SNA at the mandatory InterClub Council (ICC) meetings two Thursdays a month or as scheduled by Student Activities; this can be done by rotation of SNA members but MUST BE DONE or we cannot continue our Association.

Hi, I took it upon myself to sign up for a "hotels.com" kind of service and have received bids from several hotels. Currently the least expensive is Days Inn on Lombard Street. They are offering $69.00+tax per night on weekdays with up to 4 people per room.....(uh..that's about $20 a night if you have 4 people)....I have requested 10 rooms on this site and at Days Inn there is no deposit and we are not responsible for any unused rooms in the block. I've emailed the Days Inn on Sloat street (the one Kristine mentioned) to see if they will price-match the one on Lombard because it is a lot closer. (I have no idea about areas of SF and which ones are "shady" or not) There are about 15 other bids from other hotels at the moment. I would be happy to make arrangements for any number of people who would like me to--the whole group if need be. Any comments? Any suggestions? Anyone interested?

NCLEX Nursing Review at SFSU
I spoke on the phone with Sally Lagerquist, RN, MS who is the author/editor of Davis' NCLEX-RN Success, 2e book. She and various other nursing educators will be presenting a Nursing Review 4 day, 30 hour course on June 4, 5, 6 & 7, 2007, which will be hosted by SFSU Nursing in Knuth Hall SFSU. There is nearby motel/Inn discounts for nursing students if you tell them you are attending the Nursing Review.M. Lagerquist went on in great detail about the 99% passing success rate of this course and the various unique and funny styles used by the nursing educators to get the info across to us and into our (sometimes stubborn) heads. There will be lots of practice questions. This review is not about us reading books, but understanding the concepts and test skills and strategies to pass with flying colors. We will be given outlines for everything that is covered. No notes need to be taken.
The price is normally $275 per person. With a group of 10, the price will be $200 per person. After that the price is $275 per person regardless of group size. The price after 3/13/07 is $295. Then it goes up to $320 after 5/1/07.You can download the registration application.
Guys I really want all of us to go because I think it’s a fun way to end our class. After all we started together, let’s finish together. Everyone that I’ve talked to that attended this review class and have taken the boards have all passed.

Hi guys,
Just wanted to give you an update on what’s going on. I talked with Sally and she’s reserved 25 seats for us. There were 40 students that went from the last class. I also talked with Bonnie and wanted her to come share her experience about the NCLEX review class, but unfortunately she can’t make it. Debbie and Bonnie will share their experience in writing and it’ll be posted on the blog.

Hi guys...I have some information for you about the Delta College NCLEX review course.

It will begin on Monday, June 11th and end on Friday June 22nd. There will be 40 hours of classroom time, and 2 hours of computer testing. The course is free to all students who qualify for the student success program. All students are required to pay the enrollment fee, and once everything is completed, the grant will reimburse the students.

Hi everyone. I have asked for some advice regarding how we should go about chosing our speakers for our pinning. Upon great reflection, I feel that the most appropriate and fair way to go about it is like this....

A sign up sheet will go out next class session. If you are interested in speaking, place your name unto the area of interest. You will be asked to give a small presentation to our group, telling us why you would like this oppurtunity. Soon after, these names will go onto a voting paper the following week, and the speaker will be chosen through democratic representation of majority.

Does this sound fair to everyone? If you have any other suggestions, please let me know asap.

Kaplan NCLEX review course would like to come and give us lunch, and provide a practice NCLEX test, and information on their course. Hi there friends...a few announcements

1. Life Uniform has moved, they are in the Lincoln Center now.
2. Wal mart has white scrub tops and bottoms, they are only $9.99 a piece, if anyone is interested in getting their scrubs for cheap, pinning requires a full white uniform.
3. I called the office today, yes.....in our last, poorest semester we have to pay for our ATI's. Sucks, I know....if anyone is having a hard time paying, call Kim Thompson in the grant office and see if she can help you.
4. Mary Neville will be coming in to take a vote on the caps in two weeks...ladies, I urge you to please consider the feelings of some of your classmates regarding the caps...I for one, look forward to the giant thing, it is tradition and very important to many of us.
5. Caps are $15.00 a piece, cash or money order. I will bring one on Monday for all to see.
6. Last but not least.........this is our final semester. We are all tired, many getting a bit stressed (including myself), let us just hang in there, being friendly to one another, continuing support of eachotther, encouragement, kindness, compassion...we are almost there friends. And looks like everyone of the class ahead of us that took their boards...all passed on 75 q's....they are RN's now!!! The light is getting brighter, let us not shield ourselves, but bask in the warmth of it's glow (remembering the spf 99 of course! :)...take care guys~!

Kristine Cavanaugh took her test today and said that the format was just like the Davis NCLEX CD which is from Sally Lagerquist and the San Franciso Nursing Review, 4 day course that we just went to from the 9th to the 12th. I have heard this from other students who have taken their tests and passed. So get the Davis book and CD if you can and definitely go to the Review and practice session at the end of your semester.

A hospital that gave lethal doses of a drug to three premature babies has made another medication mistake, giving a new mother a painkiller 10 times faster than intended and making her temporarily unable to walk.
Amber Baise, 18, of Indianapolis, who received the painkiller during childbirth, has regained some movement in her legs as she recovers from what Methodist Hospital on Friday called a doctor's mistake.
"We remain hopeful that she will receive a full recovery. That is our hope. That is our commitment," said Bill Stephan, a spokesman for Clarian Health Partners, which operates Methodist and Indiana University's hospitals.
Baise entered Methodist on Oct. 8 to give birth to her first child and a doctor started her on an epidural. An improperly programmed pump gave her 10 hours worth of painkiller in just one hour.
Baise delivered a healthy girl.
The doctor who made the error works for an anesthesia practice that contracts with Methodist. The doctor has decades of experience and a good record, Stephan said. He did not release the doctor's name.
Baise's attorney, Nathaniel, said the physician's good record was irrelevant.
"There are certain mistakes that you can't make, that you shouldn't make, regardless of your education, regardless of your training, and this is the kind of mistake that you shouldn't make," Lee said.

When I was growing up, my father woke us up some mornings.
He would come into our rooms singing:
"Good morning to you, good morning to you, we’re all in our places with bright shining faces, oh what a good way to start a new day!"
Other days my mother would wake us up singing:
"Hey, what do you know, 'tis morning already, here comes the sun . . ."
What nice parents I had!
Well, until I turned 15 anyway. I don’t know what happened to them then. They got better again later, about the time I turned 20, I think. Guess they just had a bad spell for a few years.
Having been awakened in such a pleasant way every day of my formative years you will probably be pretty certain that I make sure my children start their days off in a similar way.
I would like for you to think so, in fact I encourage it.
Imagine, me, up, scrubbed, dressed in an I Love Lucy morning outfit carrying a tray into each of my children with something hot and sweet to drink and a bud vase with a daffodil festively bobbing its head along the way.
Go on thinking that.
Just don’t bet any large amounts of money on it.
Mornings around here are not unpleasant, depending on your tolerance for noise and hullabaloo, but they don’t start off with singing.
Here’s how it is typically, on a day I don’t work. Because when I do work I leave early and I have no idea how they get bathed and dressed and fed without me.
Both my husband and I are early risers. Typically I will have been up long enough in the morning to have become pretty deeply involved in some project before it is time to wake the kids up.
Then I will suddenly realize that it is ten minutes until 7 a.m. and we are late. I screech, “Why?!” because I usually don’t want to quit what I am doing.
So, instead of singing "Good morning to you” when I enter my children’s bedrooms, I usually shriek:
"Wake up! Feet on the floor! You’re late!"
I think this is a very effective way to wake the children up.
Not only does it rouse them, but it scares the pudding out of them and their little hearts pitty-pat from 60 beats a minute straight to a respectable 160 beats a minute.
This is bound to be good for their cardiovascular health. Plus they get a massive dose of good old vitamin A— as in adrenaline — right off the bat. This has the happy side effect of completely clearing their heads of any residual sleepiness. They are up, they are pumped and they are ready for battle.
Forget OJ. The double shot of fight or flight juice my kids get is a great way for them to start the day.
Not only are they wide awake and raring to go, but they are also in the right mind set for the great Bathroom Battle. We have an old house with nice big bedrooms and lots of sunshine and windows and a great big yard — and one shower.
We have tried to compensate for this with an enormous water heater, but you still don’t want to be the last guy in line.
Things are a little better now that the girls are gone most of the time. They took the art of make-up application to new heights, often taking upwards of 30 minutes to perfect the all natural look they preferred.
With them gone there is much more time available for the boys to do whatever it is they do in there that takes so long. I know for a fact that they are not spending all that time on their teeth.
Every day as they start to leave the house I kiss them and then I ask, "Did you brush your teeth?" Every single day they get the same shocked look on their faces.
"Teeth?! Do I have teeth? Am I supposed to, what was that word you used, brush them? Oh my! Whod’ve thunk?"
And then off they pound, up the stairs (which surely cannot survive too many more years of such violent use) to the one bathroom where they shove and elbow and insult each other, splash water and gargle noisily and, I am pretty sure, wet those brushes, give each other a conspiratorial wink and pound back down and out the door.
“Have a nice day!”

N6-Hey there, I'm having issues with burning the disk. I have successfully burned a couple, but I don't know what the deal is. So, If you would like to borrow my disk and burn one yourself or if there is someone else out there who would be willing to burn it, please feel free. Sorry! I tried!

A nurse returning from work discovered an intruder armed with a hammer in her home and strangled him with her bare hands, police said.
Susan Kuhnhausen, 51, ran to a neighbor's house after the confrontation Wednesday night. Police found the body of Edward Dalton Haffey, 59, a convicted felon with a long police record.
Officer Katherine Kent said homicide detectives have determined that Kuhnhausen killed Haffey in self-defense. She said a prosecutor is investigating but that the case is not expected to go to a grand jury.
Police said there was no obvious sign of forced entry at the house when Kuhnhausen, an emergency room nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center, got home from work shortly after 6 p.m.
Under Oregon law people can use reasonable deadly force when defending themselves against an intruder or burglar in their homes. Kuhnhausen was treated and released for minor injuries at Providence.
Haffey, about 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, had convictions including conspiracy to commit aggravated murder, robbery, drug charges and possession of burglary tools. Neighbors said Kuhnhausen's size _ 5-foot-7 and 260 pounds _ may have given her an advantage.
"Everyone that I've talked to says 'Hurray for Susan,' said neighbor Annie Warnock, who called 911. "You didn't need to calm her. She's an emergency room nurse. She's used to dealing with crisis."

Here are the Shock Key Points from the Critical Care Tutorials

1. Blood Pressure is Cardiac Output multiplied by Peripheral Resistance.

2. Cardiac Output is Heart Rate times Stroke Volume.

3. Hypotension is caused by either inadequate Cardiac Output or inadequate Peripheral Resistance

4. Heart Rate, Stroke Volume and Total Peripheral Resistance exist in dynamic equilibrium: these interactions maintain blood pressure. If one of the three becomes abnormal, the other two compensate. This represents the cardiovascular physiologic reserve.

5. Hypotension is an indication of 1) an abnormality of Heart Rate, Stroke Volume or Peripheral Resistance, & 2) failure of the others to compensate.

6. Shock is acute circulatory failure leading to inadequate tissue perfusion and end organ injury: it classified as being due to malfunction of 1) the Pump (cardiogenic), 2 ) the Tubing (distributive), or 3) the Fluid (hypovolemic).

7. The heart rate is a fundamental element of hypotension both in terms of cause (tachyarrhythmias / bradyarrhythmias) and compensation – hypotension should be accompanied by a tachycardia.

8. Low Stroke volume is caused by a problem with reception or a problem with ejection.

9. Problems with reception are: inadequate venous return or cardiac inflow obstruction.

10. Fluid loss is caused by either absolute hypovolemia (e.g. blood loss) or relative hypovolemia (“third spacing”).

11. Cardiac inflow obstruction is caused by a pericardial (tamponade) or intrathoracic process (PEEP), or a lesion within the heart itself (mitral stenosis).

12. Problems with ejection include pump failure (ischemia, overload, contusion, inflammation) and outflow obstruction (embolism, aortic stenosis, aortic crossclamps).

13. Shock caused by low peripheral vascular resistance is caused by loss of tonic vasoconstriction (vasoplegia), due to sympathectomy, anaphylaxis or sepsis, leading to relative hypovolemia.

14. Vasodilation associated with septic shock occurs due to increased synthesis of nitric oxide, activation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels in vascular smooth muscle, and deficiency of vasopressin.

These tutorials are short and sweet and break all of the difficult concepts of N7 into easy to understand packets.
I read the respiratory section the night before our test and scored really high. (hint, hint)

BIG BIG OOPS !!!!!!!!

I have been working on giving our test bank a face lift for the past few weeks. I have fixed all of the links, made titles for easy test link ID, rearranged the order and colors, etc.
but then...........
I got so excited and relieved to be finally finished that I accidentally hit the wrong key and deleted the whole bank out the Blog's existence.
Fortunatly, I have been keeping an updated copy on a word doc just in case (I know myself too well), but I do not know how to get it back to that exact moment in time to have all links to the bank still work. So I have reposted it in our January 2005 archives.
